Prologue

SPOKEN BY THE PLAIN DEALER

I the Plain Dealer am to act to-day,
And my rough part begins before the play.
First, you who scribble, yet hate all that write,
And keep each other company in spite,
As rivals in your common mistress, fame,
And with faint praises one another damn;

William Wycherley's The Plain Dealer (1677)

Damn with faint praise, assent with civil leer,
And without sneering, teach the rest to sneer;
Willing to wound, and yet afraid to strike.

Alexander Pope (1735)

Sir, I am am tolerably certain that, in these two instances, for lo, these many years Wycherley and Pope have not been misquoted.

American Media Distribution - A sign of the times.
I thought you and your readers might want to hear about this one.
I received an odd email that turned out to be an interesting job offer. It seems there is a company that is changing the way freelance journalists get jobs. They have a nationwide network of reporters that they dole out event coverage to when they receive an order from a national magazine or news bureau. Instead of the magazine sending an in-house reporter out to cover an event or story they cal one of their reporters in their nationwide network to go cover it locally so it cuts down the travel expenses for the magazine. They are kind of a "Freelancer" temp agency, or freelancer agent. I though I would tell you about them because I made a bit of money already covering a couple of event for them and thought it was very interesting and a sign of the recession laced times we reporters are living in here in the states.

@Steve

Who is to judge what is "irrelevant banter"? If I were to encounter you and your friends in a pub, I'm sure I would find your banter irrelevant, too. Your friends, however, might find it very interesting and informative. Twitter is no different: One man's “diarrhea of the mouth” is another man's insightful comment on the issues of the day within their particular community.

The reason so many people see it, as you do, as "pointless, intrusive, shallow chatter of the lowest order and phylum" is, I suspect, because we are unaccustomed for this type of semi-private human communication to be carried out on sophisticated and public communications platform. Historically, one-to-many broadcast media have been expensive and therefore the preserve of those wishing transmit high value information and cultural output.

More banal communication has historically been confined to private, peer-to-peer channels like letters, the telephone and (more recently) email. Twitter upends this old distinction, hence the moral panic it caused when it first went mainstream.

I have to disagree with you Mr. Stabe, in your defence of Twitter. The Times article makes for a strong argument, e.g. the narcisissm and lack of identity of Twitter users. But more to the point: in this post digital era of internet, email, cell phones, facebook, and now Twitter–humans are being overrun with an endless torrent of information, too much in fact. Twitter serves to only compound this problem. Twitter could most aptly be described as "diarrhea of the mouth", this endless fountain of irrelevant banter. "What are you doing now?" is the Twitter catch phrase on the Twitter website as they try to sell Twitter to the masses. "Find out what your friends are doing through their day". Maybe Twitter appeals to people who have a fear of being alone, in peace? Quite likely. It appeals to people who fear being alone, fear quiet, fear not talking about anything to anyone. Its little wonder there is an explosion of attention deficit disorder these days. Twitter is the perfect application to keep you distracted all day long. Twitter may have exceptional uses, as in emergency communications, but by and large it serves as a platform for pointless, intrusive, shallow chatter of the lowest order and phylum.
