Peak oil day: it’s all downhill from here

Global oil production peaked on Thursday, if you believe the estimate by Princeton geology professor emeritus Ken Deffeyes.

Of course, this is not exactly uncontrovertial, but some people seem to be taking it seriously.

Computer sale causes stampede

There was a stampede in Richmond, Virgina, as thousands of people rushed to a sale offering used Apple iBook computers for $50 each. Within seconds of the sale opeing at 7 am, there were “several minor injuries”, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The four-year old Apple notebooks had become available after the county school system switched to another supplier.

Feeding the hungry: the video game

Not sure what to make of this yet: the UN World Food Programme has released a video game called Food Force:

The game puts players in charge of a hunger relief effort on the fictional Indian Ocean island of Sheylan, ravaged by a civil war, flooding and drought. You lead a crack multinational team of WFP professionals including a logistics officer, nutritionist and air drop specialist, and you must lead the team through six missions to bring food and supplies to the desperate natives of Sheylan — everything from air surveillance to figuring out a good balanced diet, airdropping supplies, and helping natives get the most out of their natural resources by planning future farming efforts.

I guess it’s a step forward from using video games as a recruiting tool for the armed forces.

Adobe to buy Macromedia

Better go upgrade Dreamweaver before I get sucked into using GoLive.

Adobe wants to buy Macromedia for $3.4 billion.

The attention will be on the U.S. antitrust regulators, but I wonder whether the EU competition commissioner will have anything to say about this.
