It's just the British model of magazine publishing – quick, cheap and dirty. As opposed to the overstaffed, overengineered American one (see Portfolio). As somebody loosely involved in the vastly successful launch of Maxim in the USA, I was always amused when American publishing people boggled at how few people could produce a million-seller. But maybe they're finally realising that a low cost base is a good thing. The mainstream publishers will have a struggle tearing themselves away from the days of the Editor-in-Chief's limo to lunch, though.
